Music sounded very different in 1915. ✨

This Edison phonograph originally belonged to one of our home’s first owners over a century ago and has since found its way back to The Painted Petal in the exact same spot it stands today.

Long before streaming services and speakers hidden in the walls, evenings were often spent gathered around pieces like this, listening to music together as it filled the home room by room.

Today, it remains one of our favorite reminders that the stories within historic homes like The Painted Petal are never truly lost… they simply wait to be heard again.

In the early 1900s, electric lighting was still considered a modern luxury in many American homes. ✨

Fixtures like these reflected a growing shift from gaslight to electricity, blending craftsmanship, decorative artistry, and new technology during a time of rapid change. Homes built during this era often featured ornate metalwork and exposed bulbs designed not only to illuminate a room, but to showcase the beauty of electric light itself.

More than a century later, these warm lights still cast the same glow throughout The Painted Petal.

Some houses come with history, ours came with a bomb squad.

While renovating The Painted Petal in February 2023, we uncovered wooden crates hidden behind the basement oil tank that turned out to contain nearly 100-year-old TNT from the former Trojan Powder Works in Allentown. What began as a routine day of cleaning quickly became one of the most unforgettable chapters in this home’s history.

After local authorities arrived, the Allentown Bomb Squad was called to the property to investigate further. The crates were carefully removed from the basement and transported away for a controlled detonation that shook parts of the Lehigh Valley. If you remember hearing massive booms in February of 2023 — that was likely the TNT from our basement making its final exit.

From hidden artifacts to stories preserved within these walls, The Painted Petal continues to remind us that old homes carry lives, memories, and mysteries far beyond what meets the eye.
